The Allies had all these special forces, various paratroop and commando units which were supposed to speed ahead of this great armored stampede conducted by the Germans. None of these went terribly well. You've got Otto Skorsenny and his commandos disguised as American GIs. And indeed he had an entire armor brigade supposedly disguised as Americans. But when the shout went out, he didn't get sufficient equipment or uniforms. So ultimately it was the advanced commando units that were sent forward to reconnoiter bridges that were the most convincing as Americans.
