The Safety Aspects of Autonomous Driving

I always tell people that I feel like we could have the safety aspects of autonomous driving today with autonomous driving if we were willing to do one of two things, either drive extremely slow, or limit all points of potential conflict. The perverse effect is that while we may be traveling faster to work, all of our destinations are also further apart. Once people are driving fast, you can't make things close together because then you would have to have too many intersections and so on. So I think it's possible to have a place where it's safe because people aren't going fast,. It doesn't take you any longer at all to get where you're going.
