CHAPTER

The Role of Mitochondria in Insulin Resistance

In rodents, we induce insulin resistance on a high fat diet within about three weeks, and mitochondrial content actually goes up. But even in rodents, when you have more mitochondria, if you look at permeabilized fibers, how they respond to a really small amount of ADP is actually impaired when they develop insulin resistance. So that's why I always go back to say I don't think there's a dysfunction in mitochondria that's leading to insulin resistance. There's a high lipid environment that's activating a lot of mechanisms, including changes at the level of the mitochondria.
