Hesiod is asserting that through hard work, the ordinary farmer may win. To Hesiod, wealth meant having your granaries full of the sustenance of life at harvest time. Scholars have interpreted Hesiod's poem against a background of the grarian crisis in mainland Greece. This poem is one of the earliest known musings on economic thought.
