The Importance of Volunteerism
I love how we touch back on our mothers and grandmothers. I had two matriarchal grandmothers on both sides who were very involved. The word in the title of the book is volunteerism, which encompasses that but has a meaning of sort of private provision of public goods. But it's also that private provision can happen in ways that we wouldn't necessarily associate with volunteering. We would not think of that as volunteering in any way, but he didn't have to build Rockefeller Center there.
