There are certain aspects of writing by hand, which is distraction free. There's also the physical arrangement of the notes. You don't need to know exactly where they are. At least I haven't seen a representation of that physical experience. It came to my mind again reading Annie Murphy Paul's book on the extended mind. She stresses the importance of thinking within physical surroundings. The settle cast takes it a little bit more metaphorically, thinking inside the settle cast box. But that seems to me to the trade-off.
