The Shadow of the Torture

By the end of the book he really is in a different place where he was using Thecla to try to heal Jelenta. He certainly sees a different attitude on human life than he did. It seems like he is making progress away from what the torture on the shadow of the torture represents. And so his transformation now is in a place of danger right and he's either going to make a choice here as well.
