qualified immunity is a defense to a civil rights lawsuit. It says that if you're a government official, you violate somebody's rights, they get to sue you. What happened was that the Supreme Court invented out of whole cloth,. this defense that we call qualified immunity. The primary function of qualified immunity in our system is to relieve police officers from liability In cases where everybody agrees that they have committed a rights violation, and they still receive a get out of accountability free card in the form of qualified immunity.
