The History of Tea in Japan

Evidence suggests tea was already being cultivated in japan by the eight hundreds. The relative lack of tea appearing in the tax rds of japanese estates suggests that at first japanese farmers just didn't know what to do with the dang thing. Meanwhile, japan's aristocrats were mad for the stuff. In his excellent book, a bowl for a coin, william wayn ferris found a great anecdote that illustrates just that.
