Eric Liu: If there was no privateering, I think that the American revolution certainly would have gone in different direction. Maybe without privateers causing problems for British shipping and forcing a number of British warships to do convoy duty,. The Royal Navy might have been able to focus more of its force just on the American colonies. "I'm not going to say that it definitely would have changed the outcome of the war," Liu says.
