Kramer's Essay on AIDS
GMHC helped care for the afflicted, set up wills, distributed information. Kramer's reputation as a sexual conservative was also part of the reason that his call for urgency and attention were ignored. His writing was viewed as the continued ramblings of a puritanical playwright out of touch with the community. The lack of testing for AIDS allowed people to be willfully ignorant of the emerging crisis.
