How Did the Vowel Shiff Change English Spelling?
The sound began as a before it shifted to e. And scribes use the letter e to represent that original a sound, like in cafe and resime. But they often did that by doubling the letter for the long sounds. So there's still a bit of fluctuation between those sounds to day. We also have a few words in english that be pronounced either way.
