The Sound Board of Psychosis
Psychosis exists on a spectrum. It's dimensional. It's not black and white. I like to think of psychosis as a sound board, like a soundboard at a music show. Dopamine is the driver, the controller, the modifier, the medium for psychosis and for mania. When this circuit gets overloaded, too much dopamine surging or activated in that circuit, we usually start to see paranoia. So substances when they cause psychosis, one is they can act directly on dopamine. But it also turns out that other receptor systems kind of have a downstream relationship.
