Nicholas and Elizabeth met when they were both teaching at a St. Andrews prep school. Nicholas was not only nine years her senior, he was by almost all accounts a condescending asshole. A family friend would later say of him that he was too busy looking down on the whole of human nature,. sneering and jeering at humanity at large.
