The Role of Peer Review in the Early Years of the Royal Society

Archaeopteryx is one of the most remarkable and least expected fossils, which has ever turned up in a fossil state. So here's a very good example of peer review, that the thing is, as you might say, gentlemanly, but there's a little bit of edge. It does feel quite critical. You could certainly say this is evidence of science and its critical friends trying to make sure that quality is maintained. But there's no question when you look at this, you're reminded of science being a human endeavor with jealousy and envy.
