Campion's Posthumous Impact on the Counter-Reformation Martyrology
After his death, Campion was rapidly constructed into an icon of Catholic and Jesuit martyrdom. Literary texts and images played a vital role in this construction. His own high profile trial was the first of these anti-Jedduic treason trials. The Elizabethan administration showed considerable political acumen by trying Catholic priests and recheasants not for heresy, but for treason.
