The Earth's Climate
Plate tectonics acts as a massive thermostat for the planet. Oceanic plates contain huge stores of carbon dioxide. When volcanoes release magma, it also contains some of that CO2. And there it hangs around, and it absorbs sunlight, which in turn warms the atmosphere. This unique property of Earth has kept the planet's climate stable more or less constantly for over 4 billion years.
