There was negligible net growth during the first 100 or so million years of human habitation. We got over 1 billion by 1850, but then it doubled again during the next 100 years. And then even more, we're at 7.7 billion now. That said, the fertility rate has been falling. The story of the fertility rate in the US alone is really wild.
