The Influence of John Jacobaster on New York Real Estate

The first Astor to come over to the United States as far as I'm aware was actually Henry Astor, who was the older brother of Johann Jakob Astor. John Jacob Astor insinuated himself very early on into the fur trade in central New York. He started off trading fur pelts and then gave that up because he clearly saw where the money was going and started to invest in real estate. By the end of the 19th century, the Astors were referred to as the Landlords of NYC.
