Some of the conversations in the novel between the obanje spirits were lifted right out of amaisie's own journal entries written ten years earlier. Ow one thing that's really striking about this book, about the different selves who inhabit the body of otta, your central character is that some are female and others are male. And it's one thing to sort of think about that in a metaphorical sense, but if you take that idea literally, this is really a radical rethinking of gender.
