The End of Shostakovich's Symphony
Shostakovich was a humanist of the highest order. He believed in conscience. Whatever came after the 1905 revolution, it was at least at first a righteous revolution of people who had been repressed for far too long. Perhaps in using these revolutionary songs, Chekhovitch wrote,. as one friend suggested, a requiem for a whole generation which had started with great hope and then had thatHope smashed by a government even more terrible than the one it replaced.
