The Importance of Recognizing Invisible Incentives in Medicine

Drug dealer MD: We need to become much more aware of both the visible and invisible incentives inside of medicine. The racial component here is really complex in the sense that there's good evidence showing that healthcare providers generally underprescribe opioids to black people, to black and brown people because they assume that black and Brown people are drug seeking. And so I do think it's important to acknowledge that and also interestingly in the beginning of the opioid epidemic, the highest rates of addiction to prescription opioids were among white middle class people.
