The first real known sighting of champ as we know champ was on May 18th 1808. Scientists believe this might have actually been him seeing a garfish or a garpike. According to the book, these like the garfish are long like serpentine kind of looking things and they are like silvery. They're slithering around. So they think that might be what he was referring to when he was talking about that.
