The Importance of Variance in Music Theory
Vayburn's cantata number one was subject of some of the earliest theoretical discussion of serialism. If serialism was all about going through every single permutation of a set, what if you didn't permute every element? There was a lot of discussion in the late 50s in music theoretical circles about the idea of invariance. These ideas were some of those which inspired Jung's first major work - his trio for strings from 1958.
