Rachaela Jha has a paper where she argues that the abolition of the examination system was a key contributor to early 20th century political volatility. I agree with it, but there are two kinds of stability and they tackle one. So once you abolish the examination system, then people lost hope. And basically you don't have any upward mobility so they rise up. The other source of stability is the stability among the elites. Most of them fail not because of this society conflicts with the state, but because of the conflicts among the elite. But in the end, it's the really the elites that can be.
