Mudd was in character anxious. Just wasn't smart enough to see where the stuff was. If you had made a good check, I would have given you advantage, but you got a zero. Luckily for you, you are on the same side of the cave in as the rest of your party. It's not like it's impassable. In my mind, any time parts of the cave fall, it's a cave.
