The word sepsis was introduced in the Hippocratic texts, meaning quote the decomposition of animal or vegetable or organic matter. In Greek and Roman literature, not just in medical texts, but also classic literature and philosophical writings, where it likely held symbolic meaning. It's unlikely that the sepsis referred to in most historical texts pre-19th century would always fit the definition that we use today.
