I think the quickest and simplest explanation has to be technological change for sure. The amount of tension that it requires to read a novel and appreciate it is very different from just watching TV or looking at your phone so there's competition for attention in a way that there wasn't in the past. To get the whole story we'd have to examine the 20th century history of the arts as a whole and then literature in particular.
