You may know the later famous speech of Lincoln in his campaign when he was in Wisconsin, 1859. He told the story of the Eastern Sage, who sent out his wise men, defined a single truth that was true in all times and in all places. And you remember the answer. They brought it back. This too shall pass away. The Lincoln quoted that, and he said, and yet we hope that this is not quite true about America. That through the cultivation of our land, morally and intellectually, while the earth endures, this country might not pass
