The History of China

China had really fallen behind because Britain had an industrial revolution which started with the steam engine and all of that went into the military early on. In 1839 Britain invaded China we call it the first opium war probably the most cynical nasty particular cause of war in modern times perhaps. Since Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1978 China has been peaceful and focused on economics but they are catching up.
