CHAPTER

How to Pass Layoffs During Your Job Search?

If you were laid off and interviewing for a new role, how should they speak to pass layoffs during their job search without it negatively impacting a potential employer's perception of them? I mean is it something that you would bring up at all? I would. One is sometimes employers can tell because they didn't look at a resume and be like what did this person stop working right there. As an employer I'm going to want I'd rather have them say my role was eliminated.

That's totally fine. I think it all comes out in the wash. Yeah, most likely that person has you know someone else has given them the time and that advice so it's kind of like potentially their way of paying back for what they've gained in their career. Yep,
Speaker 2
yeah of course. If you put yourself in the shoes of someone who has just laid off and they're interviewing for a new role, how should they speak to pass layoffs during their job search without it negatively impacting a potential employer's perception of them? I mean is it something that you would bring up at all? I
Speaker 1
would. I would put it out there for a couple reasons. One is sometimes employers can tell because they didn't look at a resume and be like what did this person stop working right there and as an employer I'm going to want I'd rather have them say my role was eliminated. The thing that's the thing I would say not to do is a couple of years ago I interviewed a candidate who had recently been laid off and it was for a role not on my team but on a parallel team and the person spent like 20 minutes bashing their company about like I'm so pissed off that I was laid off and they should have done this and they should have done that and look maybe they should have I don't know where that person came from and I don't know that person's story but when you flip it and you hear other people say my role was eliminated and here's what I did instead. I kind of talked about this earlier. I put a plan together. I reached out to these three people. I made sure that I was still brushing up on my skills or whatever it has working on some side projects. I recently talked to someone who had their role impacted and they said so I'm no longer doing this thing for my former company but I am putting myself out there on LinkedIn to offer maybe some free consulting in what I do for project management to nonprofits or arts organizations just to make sure that I'm still developing and growing. That to me stands out far more about how a responsible mindset fits within an interview environment versus the other which is like oh I was laid off and it was a horrible experience. I would say if it was a horrible experience and the person's upset about it that's okay but probably not bring it up
Speaker 3
and interview them. This is extremely helpful. Very good
Speaker 2
advice. It's like obviously don't but sometimes you got to tell people
Speaker 1
don't do that. Sometimes especially for people and I think this happens with APIs too is like we hold stuff in until someone opens the door for us. I think sometimes like interviews especially and I think this happens when I interview people that are Asian. Like they automatically walk in with this level
Speaker 4
of comfort like oh yeah. I see
Speaker 2
you. You age.
Speaker 1
Exactly. You know this person you know that person and then but you sometimes can get too comfortable and I think overshare in a way that actually doesn't make yourself look good. And so I think it to be thoughtful about it but I do think that especially it's if somebody says that their role was eliminated and it shows me that they weren't afraid to manage that shows me the responsibility they're taking for owning it shows me that they're upfront and transparent and they didn't leave me to guess or wonder why there was like a break in service or an empty space in the next day. So I personally really appreciate
Speaker 2
that. Very good advice. Yeah.
