You Are Not That, Not That
In Western heritage we have this great idea which I've propounded here as the basic theme of the Orient. Basically that the ultimate being and mystery and energy and source of the universe absolutely transcends all categories of discussion. And so Schopenhauer for example repeats time and time again as representing the essence of his own thinking. It's a basic human wisdom which has been carried to glorious flowering in the east and which in the west has remained recessive behind something else. Now contemporary with Heraclitus and Pythagoras were Pindar and East Galus,. exact contemporaries with the Buddha, exact contemporaries by the way with Confucius also.
