In your research of history, when does this shift start to happen and how is it related to colonization and also a more Euro Christian centric version of what gender role should be? This is a kind of complex answer. I will try to break it down so we know throughout history men and women beautified up until like the 1700s. But by the end of the 1700s, culture had drastically changed. It was the age of reason, scientific, political and philosophical discourse around European society. And everything became so serious and stark. Reason became the primary source of authority and legitimacy.
