The New Western Mythology - The Cowboy
In the 1900s, and even more so after about 1920, people wanted to see the West as an arena for strong independent men who stand apart from state, corporate or institutional power. The cowboy of course filled this role, which is ironic, we should note, because in fact, cowboys were very much dependent on their employers. So the cowboy became the central character of the new Western myth, the Wild West myth.
