I know for a lot of MDM researchers the emphasis on cognitive field research has been counterculture to their institution. At San Francisco State did you find that you had to carve out a space? Well when I started at San Francisco State the timing was really good because the university was in the process of transitioning from what had been pretty much a teaching university so you teach four classes a semester and nobody worries whether or not you do any research.
