Timothy Stanley: The Via Francigena was the most popular pilgrimage route in the medieval ages. A million people a year made that journey, many of them did not make it back. If you could make it to Rome, all your sins would be forgiven Therefore, a pilgrimage to eternity. He says Europe is spectacular and there's no place where a martyr hasn't been hacked to death or a king hasn't been crowned with the oil of God.
