The magi were a group of people who had serto found their niche in society by becoming fortune tellers. They would wear robes and amulets, and they would burn incense and they would do incantations. And as a result, the kings and rulers would always consult them before they went into battle to do a prediction. So what that shows, and we see echoes down through history with this, is that human beings, despite how rational we think we are, look for external symbols very subconsciously that we can control this chaotic universe.
