Juan Pujol wanted to help fight Nazism, because in Spain Franco as a dictator had won the war and I think he knew what was coming. He walked into the British Embassy in Madrid and demanded an interview - ready to offer his services as a spy. There was just one problem. You shouldn't really tell anyone that you are one. That spoils the whole thing. And so Pujol was passed around a series of minor British officials refusing to tell any of them what he actually wanted to do.
