Is There a Difference Between Children and Adults in Language Learning?

I get this question all the time, and I'm just flabbergasted by every time. You're not going to pick up a new accent after like age 12, especially not for something that's been your mother tongue. People also have this assumption that comes from a similar place that children are fundamentally better at language learning than adults. And they also have these massive incentives for why they want to become proficient at language and they don't have anything else going on in life. But that's because if they don't learn that first language, they can't talk, right? They're not embarrassed about getting anything wrong.
