diagnosis of alcoholic or adect, i think, in a lot of ways, saved my life. And then that complete identification with it is what caused me to sort of move out and away from 12 step programmes. For me, it didn't help ever, because i definitely got worse with each diagnosis. But where it's helpful to have some identity attached to mental illness, for me, one is, i don't want people to be ashamed. The other thing about not drinking, is that i live a very structured life. I did not become normal, and now i can go party, you know. This is actually something i need to identify with to get well.
