The Importance of Maimonides in Jewish Thought
The idea that God doesn't have a body or at least originally didn't has a body goes back much further in Christianity. Maimonides really created a sea change in Jewish thinking about God. And so I think Jewish scholars just were unable to see the body of God in this scripture because they've been taught from young age that it wasn't there. It's just such a widespread idea that people can't see what's right in front of them.
