Ironically, the Hagia Sophia, considered by some to be the main church of Orthodox Christianity, survived by remaining under Turkish rule. The Allies wanted to open the Dardanelles and open a second front against Austria and take Constantinople. With the decisive attack, could knock the Ottomans out of the war.
