In the eleventh century, some church writers who had been versed in greek put forward the idea of transsubstantiation. This could be taken as a literal reading of the sacrament. A prominent dissenter from this view said that it was unbiblical. And his dissent caused a lot of debate consternation. So he was called to a series of synods and disputations,. He eventually was forced to relent and defer in the year ten 50. But even at that time, it's clear that not everyone totally accepted this view. We don't know what a lot the lay people were thinking.
