Mesopotamian epic poem gives us one version of how it all began. Because the messenger's mouth was heavy and he couldn't repeat the message, the Lord of Colab patted some clay and put words on it like a tablet. Until then, there had been no putting words on clay. Clay from the banks of the Euphrates and the Tigris proved to be unbeatable for all kinds of purposes including building cities or making pots. Unlike bamboo used by the Chinese to write on, which rots quickly, baked clay will survive thousands of years.
