The Purpose of Suffering

The Bible gives reasons why God wills suffering for his children. Paul felt that he had received the sentence of death, but it was in order to make us rely not on ourselves,. put on God who raises the dead. That's probably the biggest overarching banner of why suffering happens to make us more holy.
