In the 1950s and 1960s, scientists were trying to identify particles in blood that cause atherosclerosis. William Fredrickson and William Friedewald used a crude calculation to calculate how much cholesterol was in one layer of plasma. The method caught on and became the standard of care where doctors would measure various fractions of cholesterol.
