The Origins of Feather Bowers

In South Africa in 1910, they started crossbreeding with ostriches from North Africa. They created this entire new type of feather called the Evans Plume. In 1913, if you have a piece of gold and some feathers in the same weight, the feathers were more expensive than the gold. Ladies just wanted to show off the biggest hats, the best quality feather bowers. It was just a way to show your status.
