When he was seven or eight years old, his parents got their first color TV. He started taking it apart to improve the signal and learned a lot about how things work. At Carnegie Mellon, he studied computer science but realized he wasn't a very good software engineer. His interest in quantum information theory led him to start working on particle physics detectors.
