Thomas Edison's Electric Lighting System
In the late 1870s, Thomas Edison's electric lighting system gets sort of fully into gear. The air above the streets becomes this horrible mess of electric wires. This requires lots of small power stations, which are in the middle of populated areas and resulted in a whole bunch of competing electric lighting companies. And this is how in several places, but not mostly New York City, the air above the street becomes this horrible Mess of Electric Wires.
