In the 1970s, Dr. Charles Scutter was a professor of pharmacology at Loyola University in Chicago. The Institute for Mind, Drugs and Behavior performed government funded experiments with mind altering drugs like LSD. In 1976, he bought a 40 acre plot of land surrounded by national forests that he could build his dream home on. He sold away nearly everything he owned to begin a new life in the Appalachian foothills where they could live off the land.
